ITHACA -- A mother and toddler were rescued from an Ithaca pond on Thursday night.

Rescue crews were called to the scene along 310 Floral Avenue after a SUV ended up going into the water.

Authorities tell CNYCentral emergency crews arrived around 8 p.m. just three minutes after the 911 call and found the car three-quarters submerged in a retention pond with a mother and her 21-month-old child trapped in the vehicle.

Investigators say the car crashed through a fence, traveled down an embankment and landed in the pond. The SUV was submerged up to its windows when officers arrived.

Crews were able to rescue the mom and child through the sunroof.

They were taken to the Cayuga Medical Center and are expected to be okay.

Investigators are still looking into why the car ended up in the water.

Information for the Associated Press was used in this report.
