WATERTOWN (AP) -- A northern New York newspaper is shutting down its bureau in Washington, D.C., after more than 60 years of covering the nation's capital for its hometown readers.

In a notice to readers published in Friday's editions of the Watertown Daily Times, Managing Editor Bob Gorman writes that Friday is the last day for the newspaper's Washington bureau. According to Gorman, "Financial pressures that have forced so many newspapers to close their Washington bureaus in the past five years also have caught up to the Watertown Daily Times."

The 20,000-circulation newspaper opened the bureau in 1950. Through the years, it was among the smallest papers in the nation to operate a Washington bureau.

The Daily Times covers Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
