SYRACUSE -- Syracuse City School's superintendent Sharon Contreras confirms she will ask the board of education to shutdown Elmwood Elementary School on Syracuse's south side at the end of the current school year in June.
Last year, under different leadership, the board of education voted to close the school, then reversed the decision under heavy pressure from parents and community groups who did not agree.
If the board adopts the Contreras plan, students who currently go to Elmwood would be shuffled to other schools in the same quadrant or area of the city.
Targeting Elmwood is seen by district leaders as a way of dealing with what has become a very costly issue. Contreras has said the district does not have the money to shift extra resources to Elmwood which would be required to boost its low student achievement.
