SYRACUSE -- People living in Syracuse get to keep more money in their pocket under the Mayor's budget proposal.

Mayor Stephanie Miner released her budget proposal to the city's Finance Committee on Monday.

The $661 million budget does not include a property tax rate increase. Water and sewer rates also stay the same. It does ask city workers to contribute more to their health care plans, and it calls for a wage freeze for most city employees.

Mayor Miner says the city is also keeping a close watch on overtime costs. Almost $2 million will be saved on police overtime at Hancock International Airport since a new contract was signed with a private security firm.

The mayor also fully supports the school district's budget which calls for 150 job cuts and closing Elmwood Elementary School.

Miner says the city is in much better shape financially than in previous years. She had a much more dire spending plan ready to go until the city learned it would get $21 million in state aid.
