SYRACUSE (AP) -- A 16-year-old boy has been charged with burglarizing a young cancer patient's home and his mother is accused of trying to help cover up the crime.

Syracuse police tell local media investigators also found property that had been taken during the March burglary at Catherine Meeker's home. She was with her 13-year-old son Joshua in the hospital where he was being treated for cancer when the break-in happened.

Michael Comer is charged with burglary, grand larceny and possession of stolen property.

His mother, 38-year-old Socorro Miranda, is charged with criminal possession of stolen property.

The theft prompted an outpouring of support after The Post-Standard of Syracuse published a letter Meeker wrote to the burglars, speaking of the anguish they caused her family. Information wasn't available Thursday on whether Comer and Miranda have lawyers.
