SYRACUSE (AP) -- A Syracuse University scientist says global warming skeptics are misrepresenting his research on ancient crystal sediments in Antarctica.

Professor Zunli Lu led a team that published a study in March concluding that the mineral ikaite could be used to study warming and cooling trends.

Part of that research found crystals in Antarctica that contained evidence of climate trends in Europe in the 10th, 11th and 17th centuries.

Bloggers and some newspapers have been trumpeting the study as proof that global warming is a recurring, natural phenomenon, not caused by pollution.

But Lu says that is completely wrong.

He tells the Syracuse Post-Standard that his research didn't examine the causes of climate change at all, and didn't contain proof that the whole Earth has warmed up before.
