SYRACUSE -- After giving an unusual speech in court, a Syracuse man with ties to a missing child case was sentenced for rape.
Damion Davis was convicted of two counts of rape in the third degree, and one count of endangering the welfare of a child. Prosecutors say he had sex with a 15-year-old girl on at least two occasions. Davis was sentenced to a total of one and a third to four years behind bars. He will serve that sentence after he finishes a current sentence on an unlawful imprisonment charge.
During his sentencing, Davis addressed the court for about 20 minutes. He talked about what he considers the controlling powers of the world, from politics, to religion, to mind control. He says he has been a target because of his blood type, and his knowledge of unusual activity, like interdimensional travel. Davis stayed calm throughout his speech, including reading a list of names of people he believes are involved.
Davis's defense attorney, Jarrod Smith, says Davis went through several mental health evaluations before the trial. Davis says those evaluations focused on his views about aliens, and not his mental health.
The girl Davis is accused of raping gave birth to Qua'mere Sincere Rogers six years ago. The child disappeared in 2008 while in Davis's custody. Davis told police he gave the boy to a man in Brooklyn, who Davis says was a member of a religious sect based in Georgia. Prosecutors say investigators are still searching for the child.
Defense attorney Jarrod Smith says DNA evidence proved Davis is not Rogers's father, although he did care for the child. Smith says he was unhappy with the verdict in the case, saying he doesn't believe the evidence proved a guilty verdict.
