FAYETTEVILLE -- New rules at New York State Parks will ban smoking at beaches and playgrounds.

At Green Lakes State Park and several other state parks in Central New York, smoking will also be banned inside cabins and cottages. Smoking was already banned inside public buildings at parks.

As temperatures climbed into the mid 80's on Monday, parents on the beach at Green Lakes were glad to hear that they wouldn't have to worry about cigarette smoke at the beach. Some parents said smoking on the beach had notably decreased in recent years anyway and that smokers still had plenty of places to go away from where the kids were playing.

Smoking is still allowed at campgrounds, golf courses and walking trails at Green Lakes and other state parks.
