SYRACUSE -- An Auburn mailman admits he falsified statements to get workers compensation benefits.

51-year-old Daniel Markel, of Syracuse, pleaded guilty in federal court on Monday to defrauding the U.S. Postal Service and U.S. Department of Labor of $5,647.36 by making false statements and representations to obtain federal workers compensation benefits. Markel admits he was in jail during the time he was collecting the benefits, which is illegal. He was a letter carrier with the U.S. Post Office in Auburn.

Markel now faces a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for August 14.
