SYRACUSE -- Central New Yorkers are working hard to take part in Earth Day events.
Earth Day is officially Sunday, but many people are getting a head start. According to earthday.org, more than one billion people are expected to do something to observe Earth Day. This year's theme is "Mobilize the Earth."
On Friday, students from Elmwood Elementary School helped beautify Kirk Park in Syracuse. The event was organized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
"It's great that they're learning at such a young age because it's vital," says Candice Celestin from the USDA. "Once you teach the children, they'll grow up, and they'll teach their children. It's just a continuing cycle."
At Hancock Airfield, New York Air National Guardsmen were cleaning up the roads around the base. About 25 men and women volunteered their time.
"The goal is to keep the area clean and fresh and give back to the community," says Lt. Brent Lynch, who organized the event.
Earth Day events continue tomorrow.
