SYRACUSE -- A man arrested for murder in Syracuse faced a judge this morning.

Lewis Swift pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Syracuse City Court. He was wanted for days, and late last night, police arrested him in Auburn. He is charged with second degree murder in the death of Carnell Marshall.

Marshall's body was found April 14 behind the Mavis Discount Tire Store on South Salina Street. Officers call it a heinous crime, saying Marshall was brutally beaten and left for dead. Marshal was kicked, bludgeoned with a board, and burned with cigarettes. Police say it's not clear whether the injuries themselves, or being left out in the cold with those injuries, caused his death.

Sgt. Tom Connellan says Swift "has a pretty extensive criminal history. Hopefully he'll probably never see the light of day again."

Sgt. Connellan says this is still a very active investigation.

A second man, 27-year-old Gregory Ware, is also charged with second degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
