SYRACUSE -- An inmate at the Onondaga County Justice Center is accused of attacking staff members.

Investigators say 23-year-old Bennie Jackson, of Baldwinsville, was smoking a cigarette at one of the recreation yards at the Justice Center Tuesday morning. All tobacco products, including cigarettes, are considered contraband.

Deputy Neal DeStefano escorted Jackson back to his cell to be searched. Once they got there, investigators say Jackson attacked Deputy DeStefano. Another deputy came to help, and they were able to get Jackson under control.

Deputy DeStefano and Deputy Marc Marino were both injured, but are expected to be fine.

Jackson is now charged with assault and promoting prison contraband. He was originally jailed on drug charges.
