SYRACUSE -- The Syracuse Police Department handed out its Life Saver Awards for the 34th year at a ceremony Thursday morning. The ceremony was held at Justin’s Grill in East Syracuse at the monthly meeting of the Syracuse Chapter of National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.
The award is presented to honor officers who show extraordinary heroism in life-saving efforts while in the line of duty.
Four Syracuse Police officers were awarded for their split second decisions that saved lives.
Officer James Morris, Sergeant William Galvin, Sergeant Michael Mourey, and Officer Dean Rose were each given plaques to recognize their heroics.
Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler says these four officers are an example of the service his department provides.
"They indeed make my life easier, they make the citizens that are aware of our efforts feel safer in the community," says Chief Fowler.
Officer James Morris was recognized for performing live-saving CPR on an elderly man who was unresponsive and without a pulse when Officer Morris was flagged down by a car. The man, Thomas Walker, had suffered a full heart attack.
Sergeant William Galvin, Sergeant Michael Mourey, and Officer Dean Rose were recognized for their collective response to an elderly woman who was lying unresponsive at the airport. They were able to aid her until Airport Rescue and Firefighters arrived.
Each officer was presented a plaque for their heroic and selfless acts.
