SYRACUSE -- A Syracuse man who died in an apartment building fire Monday morning appears to have killed himself, according to Syracuse Police.

Daniel Ernesto Alvarez-Gonzalez, 38, was found in the bathroom of his apartment, according to investigators. Fire crews say Alvarez-Gonzalez intentionally set the fire.

Police spokesman Sgt. Tom Connellan tells CNY Central that the cause of death “appears to be a suicide”, and there is no indication that the man suffered any non-fire related injuries.

Just before 9:30 a.m. Monday fire crews responded to a fire at the Grant Village apartments on Village Drive. Once there, they found an adult male dead in the bathroom of his apartment. Fire Chief Maek McLees told CNY Central that the intense heat prevented a first responder from reaching the victim.

Connellan says police are still waiting for a report from the Medical Examiner’s office for official confirmation of the cause of death.
