PLATTSBURGH -- After a lengthy trial, a Syracuse man was sentenced for possessing a large quantity of cocaine with the intent to sell it.
Jesus Ponce, 56, was arrested and sentenced Wednesday to 96 months of incarceration followed by five years of supervised release.
U.S. Attorney Richard S. Hartunian says Ponce pleaded guilty to charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
Ponce was arrested in July 2009 following a routine traffic stop. During the stop, police found that he was in possession of 28 grams of cocaine.
Police say that because Ponce had two prior felony drug convictions, federal law classified him as a Career Offender. This means that penalties would be more severe.
