ALBANY -- A 25-year-old man from the greater Albany area was arrested after he was clocked at speeds in excess of 150 MPH on the State Thruway.
A trooper saw a motorcycle traveling south on the Thruway at 166 MPH in Ravena. The Trooper tried to stop the motorcycle when it slowed down due to traffic, and was able to get a description of the operator and the license plate before it sped off.
A description of the operator and the Suzuki motorcycle were given out over the air, and other Troopers clocked the bike between 150 and 170 MPH. Troopers were able to locate and stop the motorcycle when it slowed down in traffic in New Paltz, having traveled 50 miles in 20 minutes.
State Police said Nikkolaus McCarthy pulled over, saying that he was low on gas, and was arrested. Troopers reported that they told McCarthy how fast he was traveling, and he replied that the motorcycle could easily go faster than 190 MPH.
McCarthy was charged with 3rd Degree Fleeing Police, Reckless Driving and Speeding. He was also charged with Operating Out of Class because he did not have a motorcycle license. McCarthy is jailed on $20,000 bail.
