SYRACUSE -- A Syracuse firefighter had to get medical attention while battling a fire on the city's west side.

The fire started shortly after 5:30 p.m. at 1230 Bellevue Avenue, not far from Burnet Park. The original call to 911 implied kids may have been trapped, but firefighters say everyone inside made it out safely.

A tenant tells us a dog was killed in the fire.

One firefighter did need medical attention for a heat-related condition.

The local Red Cross chapter says it is assisting two families after their apartments sustained major damage. The five adults and two children who lived in the building were not able to stay in their homes overnight.
