SCRIBA (AP) -- State police have charged a central New York woman with choking her 93-year-old mother.

Troopers say 53-year-old Patricia Hanifan put her hands around her mother's neck and began choking her during a domestic dispute at their home in the Oswego County town of Scriba, 35 miles north of Syracuse.

Police say Hanifan also hit her mother on the side of the head.

Troopers say Hanifan's mother has been placed in safe living arrangements with the help of the county's Adult Protective Services.

Hanifan was charged Thursday with criminal obstruction of breathing. She's being held in the county jail on $500 bail.

It couldn't be determined if she had a lawyer.
