WEST CARTHAGE (AP) -- Authorities say they've caught a man who eluded police after a 100-mile car chase across northern New York.
State police say 51-year-old Brian Aikens fled from troopers who had pulled him over in Plattsburgh in northeastern New York around 2 p.m. Sunday. Police say he was wanted in Clinton County on violation of probation charges.
Officials say an hour-long chase ensued across several counties before police ended the pursuit in the northern Lewis County town of Diana. Troopers say Aikens drove into neighboring Jefferson County and fled on foot into a wooded area.
Officials say Aikens entered Longshots Bar in West Carthage after midnight and was recognized as a wanted subject based upon media reports.
Police say he was captured without incident at the bar around 12:50 am Monday. Aikens was also wanted for felony violation of probation warrants in addition to leading police on the multi-county chase.
In a written release Captain Darrin Pitkin, Zone Commander of the State Police, thanked the public and local media. "We are very grateful for the public’s assistance in this case. The timely posting of critical information by the media along with alert, calm actions by the patrons and proprietor of Longshots Bar helped solve this case," said Captain Pitkin.
Police say Aikens was processed and turned over to State Police in Gouverneur for criminal prosecution of charges in the counties where the chase occurred. He also faces the original felony charges in Clinton County.
