SYRACUSE -- A Clay man was arrested after fleeing police and crashing into another car in downtown Syracuse Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies say that just after 12:00 pm they attempted to pull over a 2011 Nissan Rogue, driven by 32-year-old Antonio Bolar, for speeding on Onondaga Lake Parkway. The speed radar clocked the vehicle at 71 mph in a 55 mph speed zone.

The deputy attempted to pull Bolar over, but he continued driving, weaving in and out of traffic, and eventually getting on Route 81.

Bolar evaded police speeding down 81-South at 85 mph. Police say he exited I-81 at Franklin Street and traveled around city streets.

At the intersection of Franklin Street and Herald Place, police say Bolar ran a red light and slammed into a 2006 Hyundai, operated by 62-year-old Gerald Cieply.

Police say that the impact brought Bolar’s vehicle to a stop and the deputy was able to approach his vehicle.

Bolar began struggling with the deputy, and the deputy was forced to taser Bolar in order to place him in handcuffs, police say.

When the deputy went to assess the condition of Cieply, police say Bolar got up and tried to flee the scene, running north on Franklin Street with his hands cuffed behind his back.

Officers from the Syracuse Police Department arrived and located Bolar near the intersection of Plum Street and Evans Street, and took him into custody without incident.

Deputies say that no injuries were reported and that no other vehicles were involved.

Police charged Bolar with third-degree escape, unlawful fleeing from police, resisting arrest, reckless driving, speeding and passing a red light after leading police on a brief pursuit.

Bolar was arraigned in the Town of Salina on Wednesday afternoon and in the City of Syracuse Criminal Court on Thursday morning.

Bolar is expected back in the City of Syracuse Criminal Court on May 16.
