WATERTOWN (AP) -- A 48-year-old northern New York man arrested after a police chase and wreck that killed a woman has pleaded guilty to attempted murder.
The Watertown Daily Times reports that Francis Morgia II of Watertown agreed Wednesday to a plea bargain that's expected to send him to prison for 18 years. Morgia was originally charged with manslaughter and later murder for the crash that killed 75-year-old Shirley Hammond of Brownville.
Police said the chase began after Morgia snatched a purse from an 84-year-old woman in a Watertown department store and ended when he collided with a vehicle carrying Hammond in Pamelia.
Morgia is scheduled to be sentenced June 15 on the attempted murder charge and 10 other charges, including robbery and driving under the influence of drugs.
