LIVERPOOL -- A central New York woman is speaking out to save E-Z Pass centers that are targeted to close.
The New York State Thruway Authority says it is closing the E-Z Pass walk-in center on Old Liverpool Road. They are also closing centers in Albany and north of Buffalo on Grand Island. Officials say closing the three centers on June 8 will save $1 million annually.
Holly Nichols has started an online petition urging the Thruway Authority to reconsider . She says she uses the center on Old Liverpool Road frequently and has friends who use it regularly, too.
"I really do think we need them in Upstate New York," says Nichols. "They're great to have."
On her online petition, Nichols writes, "It's convenient for upstate residents to check on their EZ Pass Accounts with a live person. It doesn't seem fair when all the centers in the New York City area- Nanuet, Yonkers, Queens and Staten Island will remain open."
Thruway officials say E-Z Pass customers still can access their accounts on the web or toll-free at 1-800-333-8655. There also are more than 750 E-Z Pass "On-the-Go" retail locations. A spokesperson says at this point, there are no plans to close any additional centers.
