ELBRIDGE -- An Elbridge man escaped a house fire thanks to working smoke detectors.

The fire broke out around 1:15 pm Saturday on Fikes Road. Sheriff's deputies say 23-year-old Corey Chiasson was home sleeping when the flames broke out. He woke up thanks to several smoke detectors in the house.

When Chiasson got out of bed to investigate the alarm, he found that the porch was engulfed in flames.

He and the family pets got out ok. Twenty different fire departments responded because of a lack of fire hydrants in the area.

The house suffered major damage. The Red Cross is helping the family.
