Abdel al-Megrahi had prostate cancer
The only man convicted in the PanAm 103 bombing has died of cancer
Word from Libya this morning that Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the only person convicted in connection with the PanAm 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, has died.
al-Megrahi was doing time in a Scottish Jail for the December, 1988 terrorist attack, but he was released in 2009 for humanitarian reasons. He had prostate cancer.
The PanAm bombing sent shock waves through Central New York, as 35 of the 270 on board were Syracuse University and SUNY Oswego students coming home after a semester abroad. A couple from Clay also died on the plane. SU has a continuing annual remembrance, as well as a scholars' program for the university in memory of the students lost in the attack.
