DEFERIET, JEFFERSON COUNTY -- Water shortage leads to state of emergency in Village of Deferiet

The Village Board in Deferiet, just outside of Fort Drum, passed a resolution prohibiting all water usage from an outside spigot, which includes watering lawns and gardens, washing vehicles, and filling pools. Residents are asked to use caution when using water inside the house.

Deferiet's main source of water, Well #2, has been taken offline because of a mechanical failure. Mayor Robert Foster says the well can't be replaced as quickly as necessary. It won't be fixed until at least June 1st. Well #1 can't handle the water demand. There is also a risk of mechanical failure at Well #1.

This is not a boil water advisory. The water is safe to drink.
