TOWN OF LEBANON -- Deputies in Madison County say that 22-year-old Jessie Eisenhut, of Waterville, pulled his pickup truck off the side of River Road in the Town of Lebanon around 5:00am Wednesday morning. The truck had run out of gas.
Eisenhut got out of the truck and was refueling it from a gas can when police say it was hit by a passing vending machine delivery van. The van was driven by 37-year-old Charles Hopkins of Canastota and is owned by Next Generation Vending.
Police say the impact of the crash threw Eisenhut into a roadside drainage ditch and the delivery truck came to a rest on top of Eisenhut. His pickup truck was flipped over on its side and thrown forward.
Eisenhut was extricated from wreckage and taken to a landing zone set in the Village of Cazenovia. He was transported by the Mercy Flight helicopter to Upstate Medical Hospital in Syracuse with extremely critical, life-threatening injuries. Eisenhut was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Hopkins was not injured and refused medical treatment at the scene.
Investigation into the accident is continuing.
