UTICA -- Police responded to an active burglary in Utica where they discovered a deer instead of a robber.

Utica Police say they responded to a reported burglary in progress at Monro Muffler, 225 North Genesee Street, on Thursday morning.

When officers arrived at the scene, they say they observed a broken window and a trail of blood leading to a back room. They also noticed movement inside of the building.

As an officer opened a door to enter the building, a deer leaped over him and trotted away.

Police say efforts to locate and aid the deer were unsuccessful.
