CORTLAND -- A Cortland teen is under arrest after investigators say he beat his pet dog.

According to the Cortland County SPCA, on Thursday investigators arrested 19-year-old Thomas C. Chamberlain of South Main Street on a charge of cruelty to animals. The SPCA says Chamberlain is accused of hitting his seven-week-old puppy Labrador mix on Wednesday evening when he became upset at how the dog was behaving. Investigators say the incident was reported by a witness.

Chamberlain was ticketed by Cortland Police and released. He is scheduled to appear in Cortland City Court on June 15.

The puppy was taken to the local SPCA and is expected to be all right.
