Crews are working today at a section of the Erie Canal in Dewitt to repair a collapse that occured after a sudden rush of water on Friday.

A representative from the New York State Canal Corporation says the water is draining out of the canal into Butternut Creek, and that the breach could also cause damage to the aquaduct in that area.

"We want to make sure that there's no damage to these historic structures and that we have a safe environment," Brian Stratton from the New York State Canal Corporation says.

Part of the Erie Cana trail has been shut down, and crews say they are not sure when it will be open again.
