SYRACUSE -- The push to start reading is on in Onondaga County.

The "Summer Reading at New York Libraries" program kicked off in Syracuse Tuesday morning with Jeffery Cannell, Acting State Librarian.

"Taking full advantage of what public libraries in New York State offer results in record participation in the statewide summer program," Cannell said in a media release.

Last year’s program got about 1.65 million children to spend part of their summer vacation reading. In Onondaga County, 5,715 children and teens participated and read over 90,000 books.

Students get reading lists and can participate in programs at all the Onondaga County public libraries.
