TOWN OF ONONDAGA -- The Onondaga County Health Department is warning neighbors in the Town of Onondaga about a raccoon that just tested positive for rabies.
Heath officials are warning everyone to stay away from wild animals, and make sure your pets are vaccinated.
The rabid raccoon turned up in the area around Cleveland Road, which runs between West Seneca Turnpike and South Onondaga Road or Route 80.
The Health Department outlined a few steps to prevent rabies:
--Teach children to stay away from unfamiliar animals, either wild or domestic
--Immediately wash any wound from an animal thoroughly and seek medical attention
--If your family or pet has been exposed to a bat, have it tested and seek medical advice
--Keep your pet’s vaccinations up to date
If you think you may have had contact with the animal, you should call the Health Department’s animal disease program at 315-435-1649.
