(AP) -- Authorities say at least two people have died in a house fire in an upstate New York town on the Pennsylvania border.

The Chemung County Sheriff's Office tells local media outlets that Tuesday afternoon's fire in the town of Chemung caused "multiple" deaths but police aren't saying Wednesday morning how many people died in the blaze.

Firefighters battled the blaze for about two hours after being called to the home around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Sheriff Christopher Moss says the names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of family members.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Chemung is located in the Southern Tier, 75 miles southwest of Syracuse.
