SYRACUSE -- People weren't the only ones trying to beat the heat today. Zookeepers were keeping a close eye today on animals at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo as temperatures soared into the 90s across Central New York.

While animals from warmer climates like monkeys thrive in hot weather, those used to cooler temperatures can get overheated and dehydrated just like humans.

To help protect the animals from the high temperatures, zookeepers spent the day giving animals extra cool baths and ice treats.

The zoo also has special areas indoors where any animal showing signs of heat stress can be brought in to cool off.

A heat advisory is in effect for the CNY region from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday - the first day of summer - as temperatures are forecast to rise to the mid-90s in Syracuse and Albany and upper 80s in Buffalo, with humidity making conditions more oppressive.

Health officials are advising people to drive less and avoid strenuous outdoor activity as a sweltering summer solstice brings high heat and humidity to Central New York.
