CHEMUNG (AP) -- Police say a man killed his estranged girlfriend and then himself in an upstate New York farmhouse that was gutted by fire.

Chemung County Sheriff Christopher Moss says the murder and suicide happened in the town of Chemung on the Pennsylvania border.

Few details have been released, but he says 56-year-old Dennis Perry killed 47-year-old Mary Vinson and a gun was found at the scene.

The causes of their deaths and the fire remain under investigation Wednesday.

Firefighters were called to the house at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and took two hours to get the blaze under control.

Chemung is in the Southern Tier, 75 miles southwest of Syracuse.
