(AP) -- WASHINGTON (AP) - Violent storms are being blamed for the deaths of at least nine people and widespread power outages. Many in the eastern U.S. are facing triple-digit temperatures without electricity - and without air conditioning.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said six deaths had been blamed on the storm in that state. Another was killed by a falling tree in Maryland, while two others were killed by a falling tree in New Jersey.

In addition to the heat, officials say cell phone coverage is spotty. Many residents were asked to conserve water because sewage stations had been without power for a time. And authorities cautioned people to drive carefully because tree limbs littered roads and hundreds of traffic signals were out.
