Oneida Sheriffs say to exercise caution on east end of Oneida Lake
VERONA -- Three people were rescued in Oneida Lake by the Sylvan Beach Fire Department water rescue boat around 12:30pm on Sunday.
The Oneida County Sheriff's Office says that a 22 foot Four Winns vessel operated by John Ready, 48, of Oneida, was traveling near the Barge Canal in the vicinity of Verona Lighthouse when the boat struck an unknown object under the water. The vessel then stopped on the object and started to take on water.
The Sylvan Beach Fire Department water rescue boat responded to the vessel in distress and safely removed Ready, Henry Leo, 48 of Verona, NY, and Pauline Ingraham, 44, of Verona, NY. They were then taken to the Emergency Wall of the Barge Canal in Sylvan Beach with no complaints of injury.
As Oneida County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol Unit was investigating, the vessel capsized and sank in about 10 feet of water. The Sheriff's Office now requests that all mariners exercise caution on the east end of Oneida Lake around Barge Canal and the Verona Lighthouse, because of the overturned vessel and the possibility for submerged logs and stumps.
The accident is still under investigation by the Oneida County Sheriff's Marine Patrol Unit.
It's the second boat accident to happen within the week on Oneida Lake, as on Thursday, three men were killed after their boat sunk.
