SCRANTON, PA (AP) -- Ten injured police officers and firefighters have sued the northeastern Pennsylvania city of Scranton after the mayor slashed their disability pay to minimum wage.
The unionized city employees are among about 400 whose pay was cut after Mayor Chris Doherty defied a judge and slashed their wages to the federal minimum of $7.25 per hour.
The injured workers say in a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday that Doherty violated their due process rights.
Three public-sector unions plan to file a separate motion to hold Doherty in contempt of court.
The mayor says the city of more than 76,000 is nearly broke and can't afford to pay more. He has promised to restore full pay once finances are stabilized.
