CHATEAUGAY (AP) -- Authorities say human remains have been found during a search of the property of a northern New York man missing since February.

State police say they started a homicide investigation Thursday after finding a body buried behind Dale S. Jarvis Sr.'s home in rural Chateaugay, on the Canadian border in Franklin County. Troopers announced earlier this week that they had launched an investigation into the 48-year-old's disappearance and obtained a search warrant for Jarvis' property.

Investigators began excavating the backyard Wednesday.

Officials say the body was taken to Albany for an autopsy and positive identification.

Police say they're not naming a suspect or suspects yet because the investigation is continuing. Troopers say Jarvis was never reported missing by his family because he was known to leave home for long periods.
