An event was held at the Palace Theater in Eastwood on Sunday night to help out a family who lost everything in a fire.

Mike Ahern and his family lost their belongings and their dog in a fire in Cicero earlier this month.

Ahern works as a projectionist at the Palace Theater in Eastwood, and his co-workers decided to put an event together to help him and thank him for his years of service.

Organizers screened the movie "The Great Escape" on Sunday night.  It's one of Ahern's favorites.  His friends say they hope Ahern watches the movie and knows how many people care about him.

"Something like this (benefit) definitely puts someone in better spirits because you're around your coworkers, you're around your family, you're around people that actually care about what happened" says Ahern's co-worker Jeff Meyer.  "That's really touching for a man like Mike Ahern"

Organizers also hope to raise money to help the Ahern family buy some new belongings.
