Authorities say they're investigating the death of a Binghamton man was found floating off Lake Ontario's eastern end after his empty kayak was discovered along the shoreline.

State police say troopers were called to the northern Oswego County town of Sandy Creek around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a missing kayaker.

The local volunteer fire department launched its rescue boat and spotted people on the shore who had located an empty kayak along the lakeshore 40 miles north of Syracuse.

Soon afterward, firefighters found a man floating in the water nearby.

He was taken by ambulance to Oswego Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Troopers identify the man as 33-year-old Timothy D. Confer of Binghamton. The investigation into how he died is continuing.
