SYRACUSE -- A fire broke out at an apartment on Court Street, near 7th North Street, on Syracuse’ north side Wednesday morning.
Officials say the fire started on a mattress in a back room on the second floor and caused moderate damage to two rooms.
The people in the apartment unsuccessfully tried to put the fire out. Then, they tried to carry the mattress out of the house while it was on fire, but stopped in a hallway. The fire spread from the hallway.
Officials say that no one was injured.
Two families were impacted by the fire; a family of seven with six children and a family of nine with eight children.
The Red Cross is providing shelter for both families for at least two nights.
Firefighters remind resident that if you have a fire, do not try to put it out yourself. You should call 911 immediately.
