MINNESOTA -- Typically when someone hits a deer the damage can be quite costly, mostly to the car.

For one Grand Meadow, Minnesota man, however it's the hospital bill he may be worried about after he and a deer collided near Stewartville.

Being from Minnesota, this isn't the first time Paul Laganiere has hit a deer.

"I looked over, I think I was looking at my radio or something and that's when it all happened," he said.

However, this time, the tables were turned as he was hit by a deer.

"I had my arm hanging out the window just because it was so hot. And when the deer came out, it hit the front corner, it spun around, it hit the mirror, the body must have crushed, broke my arm just above the arm just above the elbow," said Laganiere.

The damage to the Grand Prix sitting in his driveway tells some of the story.

The front bumper smashed in, the whole front fender too, deer hide and shattered glass sprinkled throughout the interior.

Not to mention the side-view mirror.

"I've got broken blood vessels and that's where the mirror, and I think the deer hit me in the face," he said.  "The doctors say they've never seen such a thing."

After the collision, Laganiere pulled his car over as quick as he could.

"Got to a stop up on the corner and pulled my arm back in which was very painful," he said.  "It'll move up here but my wrist doesn't move. So it's kind of a scary thing."

He then called his fiancee.

"I was on the phone with her. She was trying to keep me, I was kind of not unconscious, but hurting really bad," he said.

Laganiere searched for debris on the roadside during his first visit back to the scene since Friday afternoon.

With no sign of the deer or debris near the roadway Laganiere now begins his own road to recovery.

He will need to have reconstructive surgery in his face in the joint of his jaw.

He says he is slowly recovering and he even went camping over the weekend in Iowa, but had to sleep in his pickup in order to be comfortable.
