ELMIRA (AP) -- Emergency officials say an apparent tornado touched down in the city of Elmira and there are reports of several buildings damaged.

Chemung County emergency officials say a suspected tornado touched down after 4 p.m. in the Southern Tier city. They were assessing the situation and did not have details.

State Police in nearby Horseheads said the storms were severe, but there were no immediate reports of serious injuries or deaths.

The Star-Gazette of Elmira reported that crews are responding to calls of fires and downed power lines. The newspaper said some streets are impassable due to fallen trees and power lines.

The National Weather Service issued its first tornado warning at 3:35 p.m. and have received reports of fallen trees and siding damage.
