MANLIUS, ONONDAGA COUNTY -- There were no injuries, but a fire in the heart of Manlius caused quite a spectacle for neighbors Thursday evening, and left an old building badly charred.
Crews were called to The Bottle and Can Return Center on Route 92 around 6:30 Thursday evening. It's right across from the Snow Top, a popular ice cream shop. The Bottle and Return Center is the building formerly known as the Temple Dairy. Firefighters say the way the roof was built made this fire especially hard to contain.
Crews had to close off about a 2-mile stretch of Route 92, to battle the fire.
When our cameras left around 8:00 p.m., firefighters were still on the scene looking for hot spots.
Firefighters, meanwhile, tell us the humidity made for a sweaty situation, especially factoring in their turnout gear. There was a cooling station, an area where firefighters could rest up.
The cause is still under investigation.
The building was closed for two days, before Thursday night's fire.
