(AP) -- ROCHESTER, N.Y.- A 23-year-old Rochester man serving in Afghanistan has been killed.
The Department of Defense said soldier Theodore Glende died Friday in Kharwar in Logar province. He had been wounded when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire.
Glende was part of the First Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team.
His family said Glende graduated from Niagara University and was a newlywed.
Governor Andrew Cuomo directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on Thursday in honor of Glende.
"I join with all New Yorkers in mourning the loss of Private Glende and I send my deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and fellow soldiers," Governor Cuomo said in a news release. "We will honor the service of this young soldier and we will be forever grateful for his dedication to our nation."
