ALBANY -- A new law will keep minors from getting body piercings.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a law forcing children and teens under the age of 18 to get parental permission before being pierced.

Supporters of the bill say 20% of all body piercings result in infection. There is also a risk of contracting hepatitis from the procedure.

A body piercing is located on a part of the body other than the ear.

Until the law was signed, there was no minimum age requirement..

The governor calls the bill an important measure that will keep young New Yorkers healthy and safe.

The new law will take effect in late October, 90 days from now.
