CANASTOTA -- Police say 19-year-old Jacob Kern, of Rome, was arrested after troopers received a report of a possible drunk driver at the Canastota interchange, exit 34, of the Thruway.

Police say they performed a field sobriety test and arrested Kern after he failed the test.

When police were placing handcuffs on Kern, they say he resisted and tried to get away.

Police say the arresting officer and Kern both had minor injuries from the struggle and were taken to Oneida Healthcare Center. Kern refused treatment.

Kern was processed at the Oneida State Police barracks where he refused a breath test.

He was arraigned in the City of Oneida court and remanded to Madison County Jail in lieu $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.

He is scheduled to appear in Village of Canastota court on August 16.

Police charged Kern with driving while intoxicated, unlawful possession of marijuana, resisting arrest, second degree assault, aggravated unlicensed operation, and multiple vehicle and traffic violations.
