Suspect in Black River standoff runs from police armed with semi-automatic pistol

BLACK RIVER -- Deputies say they responded to a report of a suicidal person at 106 Wendell Lane in the Village of Black River around 9:49 p.m. Sunday night.

According go the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were in the process of negotiating with 38-year-old William A. Spears on the phone when he reportedly came out of the house armed with a tactical shotgun and a semi-automatic pistol and wearing a military ballistic vest.

Deputies say Spears tried to run from the police and ended up crashing his pickup truck into an armored police vehicle that was attempting to stop him.

Spears was charged with reckless endangerment, menacing a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal mischief.
