SYRACUSE -- Syracuse Police say they responded to a report of a man with a gun in the 800 block of Kirkpatrick Street around 11:35pm Monday night.
Police say when they arrived, they saw a man holding a gun that looked like an AR 15 rifle.
As officers began to approach, they say the man ran into a house at 808 Kirkpatrick Street. At the same time, police say a woman came out of the house and told police that her children were inside with the armed man – her boyfriend.
The woman told police that her boyfriend had been in a fight with another man earlier in front of the house on Kirkpatrick Street. The man allegedly pointed the rifle at the man he had been fighting.
Police set up a perimeter around the house and members of the Crisis Negotiation Team tried to get the man to come out of the house.
After about 40 minutes of negotiations, police were able to convince the man to come out of the house without the weapon.
The suspect was arrested without any further incident.
Police say they went into the home and found the woman’s two children unharmed. The children, ages 2 and 4-years-old, were reunited with their mother.
Police say further investigation revealed that the weapon was a pellet gun that was a replica of an AR-15 rifle.
The investigation is continuing at this time.
Police say further information on the suspect's identity and possible charges will be released on Tuesday morning.
