PITCHER, CHENANGO COUNTY -- Authorities say police shot and wounded a 41-year-old man when he opened fire on officers responding to a minor accident in a rural central New York.

Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting says Patrick Ford Jr. fired about a dozen rounds at two deputies and a state trooper who arrived at a town of Pitcher home where his pickup truck had gotten stuck on a utility pole guy wire Thursday evening. Cutting says Ford's 9-year-old son was with him.

A deputy got the son to safety, and when Ford refused the other deputy's orders to drop his weapon, he was shot in the upper torso.

Sheriff Cutting says Ford had threatened people in the house before police arrived.

Ford was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. Sheriff Cutting says he is expected to recover.

The incident remains under investigation by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and State Police.
